Guide 09 / 10
Choose energy-saving steps using your own data
Prioritize changes you can test, then see whether your actual daily kWh changes.
Find plausible major uses
Consider both frequency and power rather than choosing only the appliance with the highest watt rating. A large device used for minutes can use less energy than a moderate load left on all day. Start with figures whose sources are clear, then measure uncertain ones.
Change one thing at a time
Simple changes include switching off lights in empty rooms or scheduling a device that does not need standby. Note the change date and compare kWh per day across reasonably similar periods. If weather or occupancy changed, record that when judging the outcome.
Protect essential needs
Do not compromise safety, ventilation, adequate light, or an essential device just to reach a lower number. A useful saving is a measured reduction while household needs remain met. Results from another home do not automatically apply to yours.
